fictionfactor/bounce2.gif Hi,

I would like to know if most of you use a routine ie. you write for a certain amount of time each day or at the same time each day. How do you stick to your routines? Any tips?

How do you divide your "paid" writing work from your own fiction/writing? I had a pile of "paid" writing work to do today and veered off into my own fiction...I know that is bad. Do others have these issues? Any insights? I can start on this forum for example and two hours can pass-by. Do you limit yourselves?

Thanks,
Tali

My fiction writing doesn't happen during 'routine' writing time.

Because I have a full time day job (in finance) and work on Fiction factor admin stuff whenever I can (part-time job) the writing gets left to "spare time".

Keep in mind that I've got to allocate my spare time very carefully.
One evening is market research - looking for places to submit stuff I've written, stuff that's ready for reprint, stuff that might interest me for the future.

another evening is put aside for just editing - no creative time. No new stories or new characters. Editing. Period.

The rest of my spare time, I can't stop myself from writing. It demands my attention. I have a laptop that I drag around with me everywhere. I also have a 'net enabled cell phone with a voice recorder in it. I use whatever I have where ever I am and I'll write in tiny chunks during my breaks or inbetween clients.

I WISH I had a routine. Maybe one day

I don't have "paid" writing from "non-paid" writing at this point. My writing is primarily fiction but I occasionally get the urge to write an article and submit it somewhere.

I write every night after my youngest child has gone to bed, and try to put in at least a few hours. Very rarely I just don't feel like it and have a night just veging out in front of the idiot box. Like I said though - rare.

If things are particularly slow at work - I sometimes find time to do some writing there and strangely I seem to get some interesting stuff done at those times. If I could only find the winning lotto numbers I could retire and write during the day - all the time

If you're getting your "paid" writing done by the due deadlines, I don't think it's a big thing if your fiction slips in occasionally, although I wouldn't make it a big habit.

As long as you're writing something, preferably every day, then I don't think you have an issue.

Mianly weekends because of the full time job. I spend the weeks in the evening reading and spending time on message boards, and devote the weekends to writing because I think I write better in the early morning. At work, I have to be there by 7am, so by the time I get home, my head is too muddied from the day to think clearly enough to write. If I had a swing shift, I'd probably write every morning until I had to go to work. Balance is the key, I think. Frustrating, but we do what we have to do.
