I'm wondering what settings I'd have to use on Word to get my pages to look the same as they would if they were in book format. Does anyone know what font and margin sizes I'd have to use?

BardFanER,

Publishers, even the same publisher, may use many different fonts and sizes. The page size of the book, especially hard cover, trade paperback or mass market paperback would make a difference, as well as the spacing size used, and even the margin size selected.

Thus, one standard is not available to use. You would look at one particular book and try to copy/mimic that individual setup to see.

Hi BardFanER

Have a look here

http://www.writerswrite.com/writersguidelines/

It will give you an idea of what people are looking for. Don't fall for the same thing I originally did; changing the margins and font size so it looked like the little paperbacks in the store. It's not what agents and publishers want.

Stick with 1" margins all round, a 12 point font and double spaced paragraphs and you can't really go wrong.

Others (Like Fiction) change their backgrounds and fonts etc to help create mood but in the end it still has to be changed back to a standard for submission.

Find what works best for you when writing, and then find out what your target market wants. Follow those guidelines to the letter.

Hope that helps - it made my writing so much easier. fictionfactor/birthday1.gif
