I have 2 main characters that I love to death, I've dissected them to no end but I ran into a little snag with one of them.

My main man, has been crammed with war strategy from a young age, and comes from a place that relies heavily on the sea and ships.

I know that it's wise to write some of your own experiences and knowledge into your work, and I'm using that the best I can. (Lived on the shore for several years) but I don't know the parts of a 17th century ship very well nor do I know much strategy. Does anyone know of any books, sites or even tidbits of information that could help me? I want to make sure that whatever battle plans that come out of his mouth or actions he takes on a ship is completely plausible.

If I'm quiet then we're not talking about writing...or I could have lost my marbles.

I am by no means an expert on sailing ships, but I ran a quick search for you (http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=17th+century+ship+&meta= ) and found these links:

-The mayflower ; the design of the mayflower, with the different parts named.

- 17th century navigation ; about the navigation of ships and the names used for the different functions on board. Looks usefull.

- the VOC ; about the VOC, the dutch east india company, one of the largest shiping companies of the 17th and 18th century. Some of the links are in dutch though.

Hope this helps.
regards,

Rod

You might also pick up one or two books on Naval strategies and historical battles. They made us learn that type of thing in the Navy, and while I remember none of it, I remember well enough to know that it will be a huge help to you.

you just gave me a big reminder, laceu. My dad was in the Navy. (recently retired.) He has some books floating somewhere around his house I can bum from him. I doubt he remembers anything from those early days either.

And thank you Rdghuizing, I've found myself with a good deal of notes. Why I could never take notes in school and find myself doing it for my own project I'll never know.

Thanks!
