While reading through the archives of author interviews a question came to mind regarding the interviews with ebook writers. Are any of those writers actual full-time writers whose income strictly comes from e-publishing? Are there any writers that are?

I'm curious to whether a person can actually devote a fulltime writing career strictly through writing ebooks/stories. Any information that you can give me or sites you may direct me to would be very helpful. Thanks!

ArvelAmaya,

I cannot say for sure, and I don't know any e-writers that do it strictly through e-fiction.

In truth, many fiction writers--if not the vast majority (ebook, print or otherwise) who have a decent track record/mid-list, don't earn enough to support themselves completely--or at least a family.

That said, it's not impossible. One of the interviews, Sandra Kring, I know she earns her living writing fiction. However, her publisher (Bantam/Dell) is mainly print. She does okay but she ain't living in any mansion either.

I know there are full-time print writers (mid-list too) who can support themselves on their writing, though it's certainly not glamorous living, but at least they get to earn their living doing what they love.

But I have yet to hear of an e-writer of fiction that can. So was curious if a person who strictly writer e-fiction can live off it, not glamorous, but just that's their only income. I'll check out the Sandra Kring link. Thanks so much!

If anyone else knows of any let me know.

E-Book publishing is in some ways a lot like pulp writing was in the 1930s-if you write fast and can churn out the yarns at a good clip, you can make some decent money at it. My good friend Janrae Frank has better than a dozen e-books with Renaissance E-Books - www.pageturnereditions.com - and more coming out all the time. Unlike traditional publishing, every time a new book in one of her series comes out, her back catalog also takes a bump as folks new to the series pick up the previous volumes. They're always in print, which is not the case with trad publishing. So, her quarterly royalty check grows exponentially with each new book. It's still not enough to live on, but she's getting there. If RenBooks ever gets around to publishing the book they've contracted for with me, HOWLING IN THE PARK, I should start down that same road before long.

I admit I don't know anyone who makes a full time income from solely Ebook writing.

Most writers I know supplement their income with various things - like a mix of short fiction sales, fiction and non-fiction ebooks, non-fiction articles, magazine submissions, fillers - etc.

All of the above are still forms of writing, so the writers I know are actually making decent incomes from their writing efforts but in answer to your question - no. None solely from ebook sales that I'm aware of.

I'm sure there are a few out there somewhere. I'll set Tina the challenge of hunting some down and see what we come up with.

Thanks! Everyone has been so helpful with my question. Otter, it seems at least from what you said about your friend that there is a possibility of fulltime work, so that's very helpful. I went to the site and was looking over the stats as well as information about other writers through them.

Lee, thanks for going the extra mile and asking TIna to see if she can find any. I would be very grateful if she did.
